Shopify product data for AI shopping: what to check
Shopify merchants and AI shopping: what to check in your product data
Shoppers are starting to ask AI assistants what to buy, and those assistants can only recommend what they can understand. If you sell on Shopify, a few fields decide whether your products are shown accurately: titles, variants, barcodes, product type, specifications in metafields, images and availability. Here is what to check in each.
More shoppers are asking AI assistants questions like "which quiet kettle under £60 has a 1.7 litre capacity?" instead of browsing category pages. Those assistants can only recommend what they can understand. If your Shopify product data is vague, inconsistent or incomplete, your products are more likely to be skipped or described wrongly, even when they are exactly what the shopper wants.
The good news is that most of the fixes sit in fields you already have in Shopify admin. Here is what to check, field by field.
1. Product titles
A title should say what the product is, plainly. Brand, product type, model and the one or two attributes that define it. "Aurora" tells an assistant nothing; "Aurora 1.7L Quiet Boil Electric Kettle, Matt Cream" tells it a lot. Avoid stuffing titles with promotional words like "best" or "bestseller", and keep variant details such as size out of the parent title when they are handled as variants.
2. Variants
Use Shopify's variant options for the things a shopper chooses between, such as size, colour or capacity, rather than creating a separate product for each. Name options consistently across your catalogue: pick "Colour" or "Color", and "UK 9" rather than a mix of "9", "UK9" and "Size 9". Each variant has its own price, stock, SKU and barcode, so fill those in at variant level.
Variant data is what lets an assistant link a shopper to the exact size and colour they asked for. Our guide to product variants for shopping assistants explains why this matters.
3. Barcode (GTIN) fields
Each Shopify variant has a Barcode field for the GTIN: the EAN, UPC or ISBN printed under the product's barcode. It is one of the most useful fields you can fill in, because it lets a shopping assistant confirm that your listing is the same product a shopper is asking about, and compare it fairly with other retailers.
Enter the real GTIN for each variant, not a copy of the parent's.
Do not put your SKU or an internal code in the Barcode field.
If you import from a spreadsheet, format the column as text so leading zeros are kept.
If a product genuinely has no GTIN, such as a handmade item, leave the field empty rather than inventing one.
Set the product category from Shopify's standard taxonomy, and use Product type consistently for your own grouping. Fill in Vendor with the actual brand. These fields help an assistant understand that a product is a kettle, not a kettle descaler, and which brand made it. Inconsistent types such as "Kettles", "kettle" and "Electric Kettle" across one catalogue make that harder.
5. Specifications in metafields
Shoppers ask about specifics: capacity, wattage, dimensions, materials, noise level, compatibility. If those facts only appear in a paragraph of description, an assistant has to guess at them. Shopify metafields, including category metafields, let you record each one as its own field with a clear name and unit.
Weak
Better
"Generous capacity, perfect for families"
Capacity: 1.7 litres
"Fits most kitchens"
Height 24 cm, width 22 cm, depth 16 cm
"Whisper quiet"
Quiet boil: yes (only if you can state it plainly)
"Works with most phones"
Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C
Start with the five or six specs shoppers in your category ask about most, and always include units.
6. Images
Lead with a clear photo of the product on a plain background, then add detail and in-use shots. Assign images to the right variants so the cream kettle shows cream and the black one shows black. Add alt text that describes the product and variant. Some assistants also search by image, and a clean main photo helps.
7. Availability and price
Track inventory per variant, and be careful with "continue selling when out of stock" unless you really can fulfil those orders. An assistant that recommends a sold-out variant sends the shopper to a dead end. Keep prices accurate and avoid leaving old compare-at prices on products that are no longer on sale.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need GTINs for every product?+−
Fill them in wherever the product has one. Products without a GTIN, such as handmade items, can still be described well through clear titles, brand and specifications.
Will better product data guarantee AI assistants recommend my products?+−
No. Each assistant uses its own sources and ranking. Good data makes it more likely your products are understood and described accurately.
Where should I start if my catalogue is large?+−
Start with best sellers and the specs shoppers ask about most in your category, then work outwards. Consistent option names and barcodes give the quickest gains.
What should go in the Shopify Barcode field?+−
Put the product's real GTIN, such as the EAN or UPC printed under its barcode, in each variant's Barcode field. Do not use your SKU or an internal code there, and leave it empty if the product genuinely has no GTIN.
